Poland: Deaf and blind, they manage to drive a car

All 19 drivers who took part in this unusual race on the tarmac of the Lodz airport in central Poland earlier this month are hearing and visually impaired.
But like Helen Keller — the American author, activist and lecturer who was the first deaf and blind person to graduate from college — they are pushing the envelope of their disabilities.

“Out of 19 participants, 12 had never driven a car before, while seven used to drive before they became disabled,” said Mateusz Kotnowski, from Poland’s Deaf and Blind Aid Society (TPG).
“Some are completely deaf and blind. Those who can still see or hear a little wear masks and helmets to ensure an equal playing field for all,” he told AFP.
Each participant had to complete two timed laps of the circuit while under the watchful eye of a co-driver. First, though, they had two days of training to get a feel for the steering wheel.
Three driving schools volunteered a parking lot, five cars and a handful of instructors — who first had to work out a language based on touch to communicate with the drivers.
Zbigniew Palgan, the owner of a driving school, gave out a clear set of instructions to his deafblind driver, whose face showed a determined concentration.
“When I touch the left side of your knee, turn left. When I touch the right side, turn right,” Palgan said while demonstrating the motions.
“When I touch the top of your knee, straighten the steering wheel, and when I press down, accelerate. When I pull on your knee, brake.”
For safety’s sake, the instructor could stop the car at any point. But with every kilometre, the drivers became more and more confident.
Kamila Dobrzynska, a 30-year-old who is blind in one eye and partially deaf, made it up to 50 kilometres (30 miles) per hour by the end of the straight.
“It’s a weird feeling. There’s fear,” she said.
“You don’t know where you are, so your ears and eyes are those of the instructor. You need to have total confidence in him,” she told AFP.
Sylwek Slipek, who is deafblind, drove for the first time in his life — and with wife Kasia, born blind, along for the ride to cheer him on.

Riding in the back seat, she gave her husband a pat on the shoulder and said “Good luck” before a woman waved the checkered racing flag and Sylwek set off on his first lap.
The 30-something couple said that the event was a way for them to forget their everyday problems.
Sylwek once worked as a supermarket clerk but has been on the job hunt for three years to no avail. The unemployment rate for disabled Poles is 16 percent.
By taking part in the event, the couple hoped to help break stereotypes of those with disabilities.
“Perhaps others will realise that if deafblind individuals are able to drive a car, then they can just as well have a job and work,” said Kasia Slipek.
“Perhaps they’ll see us as nice people with good values — and not some good-for-nothings,” she told AFP.
Sylwek completed his laps flawlessly, earning sixth place overall.
But the trophy went to Kamila, who not only broke stereotypes of disabled people, but of women drivers as well.

Ledenon, a day like no other….
On Tuesday June 1st, a new type of pilot took to the track at the Ledenon racing circuit in the Gard department (France). On the initiative of the association « The magnificent partially-sighted in their crazy machines », and in reply to an invitation from the director of the Ledenon circuit, Marie Bondurand, 6 partially-sighted people became racing car pilots, just for one day. With the help of several driving schools which had made the trip specially, driving instructors gave the pilots the necessary instructions to enable them to move easily around the racetrack. Photo Our pilots turned out to be real racers. Halfway through the day, at the invitation of NVDM, two special guests arrived : Michèle Mouton, the famous female racing driver, world rally vice-champion in 1982 and today director of the World Rally Championship (WRC), and Julien Ingrassia, co-pilot to Sébastien Ogier, world team rally champion in 2013-2014, and the present leader in the 2015 WRC stakes. They all took up their seats in their cars, blindfolded. Michèle Mouton, as usual, stepped on the gas, whereas Julien Ingrassia drove with a bit more restraint…. PhotoPhoto After lunch and a lot of discussion, our VIPs went back to their duties on the racetrack. The members of the association « The magnificent partially-sighted in their crazy machines » went home with their eyes full of these magical moments…. The next aventure for NVDM will be next August, on the Laquais 38 circuit (France), with the former Formula 1 pilot, Olivier Panis. Another great event to look forward to. More of this later…. Nathalie Cuny, 24-hour challenge
The blind athlete from Nice, Nathalie Cuny, who lost her record to Odile Hochard in June 2014 (161.3 kms run in the Puttelange Lakes 57 race), tried again, during the 2015 edition of the "24-hour challenge" in Nice, to take back her title. So there she was at the start on May 8th at 3 pm, in the gardens of the former outdoor theatre, in the midst of a group of able athletes, Nathalie with her 14 guides. At a rate of roughly 7 Km per hour, she arrived at the finishing post on Saturday, May 9th, breathless after a 166 kilometre race. It was not an easy race, and at the end of it, Nathalie was very happy to have succeeded in her challenge, pleased also that the record remained in France and particularly in Nice. Nathalie would like to thank her 14 guides for their assistance throughout this adventure. She was running for : the AVH, and Mozart. Photo Nathalie finished 2nd in the competition, first female and first disabled athlete (male or female). For the record, the winner of the event, after 24 hours, had run no less than 168 kilometres. Nathalie will soon be back on the track for more marathon adventures. Nathalie's record will appear shortly on our official site, among the records achieved by disabled athletes.

a Georgian soldier both legs amputated

"Aleko Gitolendia, a Georgian soldier both legs amputated, aims to establish the record for the longest distance without stopping, swimming in open water, for a person with this type of disability.
During his record attempt Aleko will only use his goggles. All other equipment will be banned. This attempt will probably be made in August this year.
We will follow Aledo with great attention and we wish him already, good luck for his future challenge."

Snow and Ice were on the agenda…

For the fifth year, the Director of the Spa-Francorchamps circuit invited the members of the Association « Les non voyants et leurs drôles de machines » for their annual driving course.

In Belgium, on 25 of February 2015, 9 blind participants were taking the challenge of driving a car on the mythic Formula 1 Circuit.

Greeted in the F1 paddocks, in the Ferrari stand, the blind team was discovering with anxiety that the parking and track were full of ice.

The Circuit personnel, happy to greet those One Day pilots, were making miracles to ensure a de-snowed track of 3 to 4 meters.

At the wheels of cars generously lend by the driving school BARA, the blind team took their marks, following instructions from Pierre and David, their copilots for the day.

After several rounds, taking confidence in their driving, the members of the association NVDM were not hesitating to push speed a bit despite the unfavorable weather conditions.

As guest, we had Freddy Loix Belgian champion of rallies 2013 – 2014, Vincent Radermecker, pilot with an impressive list of victory, Maxime Soulet, Bentley pilot in Blancpin, without forgetting the memory of our dear friend Pierre Dieudonné , previous winner of Mans 24H in 1991.

Very un-assured, they took also the wheel blindfolded. And, as a matter of fact, they were still alive at the end of the day…

While it was snowing again, José Close has taken out his last resource. The Renault Mégane RS of 265 CV has taken each blind participant for a track baptem of more than 200 Km/h. guaranteed emotions!

For this wonderful time and experience, we want to thank the direction of the Circuit, Pierre Alain Thibault and Chantal Bantz, Driving School BARA and driving instructor Pierre et David. José Close for his auto challenges. Our voluntary staff: Patricia, Sabrina, Agnès, Jacques, Michel, Guillaume and Benoît Michel who greeted the media.

See you next year for a new adventure, we hope a bit sunnier

The team « NVDM »

Blind Fencing in Lisbon : A French competitor wins the first international round

Blind Fencing in Lisbon : A French competitor wins the first international round

On the weekend of February 14, 2015, I went to Cascais near Lisbon almost to attend the first international fencing tournament in the “visually impaired” category.

Four nations were represented : Portugal (the host country), Sweden, Italy, and France.
There were 16 men in our team, and there was also a team of six women.

At the end of the pools, I came first overall. This was not a goal in itself, but it augured well for the rest, because in the first knock-out rounds, I was set against the contestant who came 16th. Too bad it was a French guy...
In the quarter finals, I eliminated a Swedish swordsman, and an Italian in the semifinals.
At last, in the finals, I eliminated another French fencer, and came first in this first international tournament.

What a Valentine’s Day gift for Yolande, my partner and guide, and what a thrill for me!

Another big thank you to Gaël Fischer, my fencing master, and to Laurence Fuhrer Syda, President of the Florival Disabled Sports Club in Guebwiller (Haut-Rhin, Alsace), for their support throughout the year.

In the Oman Desert Marathon, which took place in 6 stages totaling 170 km, from 7th to 15th November, Odile had a taste of what it was like to run in the sand ...

Congratulations, Odile!
