A new challenge for Philippe CROIZON and Arnaud CHASSERY

After their Channel crossing in September 2010, our two extreme swimmers have decided to get together and to link up the five continents swimming, over four months.
From May 6th – May 19th 2012, they will swim from Oceania to Asia by going from Papua New Guinea to Indonesia.
From June 7th – June 15th, the Asia-Africa link will be from Jordan to Egypt.
From July 9th – 18th, Africa-Europe via the Gibraltar Straits.
And from August 3rd – 19th, 2012, the pair will finish up their world tour by swimming in the freezing waters of the Arctic Ocean (the Bering Strait), from America to Asia.
By the end of their expedition, they will have swum a total distance of no less than 85 kilometers, more than 45 hours of effort, sometimes having to battle against strong currents which hinder their progress, in waters ranging from very warm (up to 27°C in the Red Sea) to freezing (between 0° and 3° in the Arctic Ocean).

We wish them all the best of luck, and will be following their progress throughout.

Our friend Jean Florent...

We were very sad to learn of the death of our friend, Doctor Jean Florent, the patron of the Experts on our site ehandicapworldrecords.org. He had been a member of our team from the very beginning. He was a surgeon, with an immense culture ; he broughtus his medical skills and was present at all our challenges.

Always on hand to help, he was one of our greatest well-wishers.

We are sorry to lose such a great friend, and our thoughts are with his nearest and dearest.

Many thanks to you, dear Jean.

Pilots for One Day

Pilots for One Day
Blind team on the mythic Formula 1 race track in Spa-Francorchamps, Belgium. For the second year in a row, and invited by the race track direction, the Association « Les non voyants et leurs drôles de machines" was taking its members for an unforgettable automotive day! Twelve people with visual impairment, 7 French and 5 Belgians, were meeting in the Ardennes Circuits. Car racing is getting more attention from the female population and it is the case in the Handicapped World as well, as 5 female representatives were present for the event and they did not leave their turn to their male counterparts. After a few adjustments of language, which is necessary for a good communication between pairs pilot-copilots, the “Intrepids” departed for the track, as dauntlessness as impatient. An extraordinary experience which did not deceive them, as they were touched or joyful putting foot down, comparing their « time record », their piloting styles and the exactitude of their runs. Photo Photo Photo During the third lap, Raphael has put everyone in agreement with a peak speed of 120 km in the double left turn of Blanchimont. As last year, Jose Close had brought the entire crowd in a first run on board of the Renault Mégane RS of 252cv. Guaranteed sensations! At the end of the day, Luc was taking the Renault to do a few laps and pushed the car to 175 km in a straight line, before the Combes, which is 30 km faster than his last track record. David, his copilot, declared: “No so easy to run so fast, the car is less stable than a Fun Cup. It is a real exploit.” It was again a magic day, for which we have to thank all the volunteer that were present: Françoise et Frédéric who came from Carpentras (South of France), Michel who was doing the visual impaired person briefing before their installation in the car, without forgetting Benoît Michel, which was our press speaker, driver, coordinator for the catering and chief of safety. We also want to thank specially the Race track Staff du circuit which is : Pierre Alain Thibault who was confirming his invite for the next edition, his right arm Luc Willems, without forgetting our pilot José Close. Finally, a big and sincere thank to our friends which were so generous and so patient: David et Pierre from the driving school BARA as well as the company Bara of Fontaine l'évêque for their partnership. See you in 2013 for a new adventure on the most beautiful race track formula 1 of the world … ! NVDM – Les non voyants et leurs drôles de machines © Photos : Frédéric Pauwels

Four new worldwide records for our sports expert, Delphine Le Sausse :

In Cincinnati, Ohio, Delphine made her mark again during the last Handiswimming World Championships.

She earned four Gold medals, a reward for a year that has been full of events and emotions, especially at the French Championships : a gold medal for diving, for the combined programme, for the figure programme, and for the overall tournament.

France also won a neat Bronze medal, coming an overall third on average among the countries present.

See Delphine’s website for the complete story of her latest exploits !

The team at the Spa-Francourchamps Formula 1 racing-car circuit in Belgium invited the European association “Les non voyants et leurs drôles de machines” (“the non-sighted and their amazing machines”) to participate in a driving school training session, on March 15th of this year. Five non-sighted or partially-sighted people were visibly very happy to take part in this initiative, thanks to the Bara driving school, which had generously put its cars and monitors at their disposal for the day. The monitors guided the non- or partially-sighted participants through the training session, using vocal instructions to help them move around the circuit. PhotoPhotoPhoto Reaching speeds of up to 100 kilometres an hour, the one-day drivers quickly got used to this method of functioning, and managed to move around very efficiently with their partners. Towards the end of the day, José Close, a professional driver, took all the little group for a spin in a 250-horsepower Renault Megane RS, which had been lent by the circuit organizers. It was a fantastic and unforgettable day for all those involved, sighted and non-sighted alike. We would like to thank the management team of the Ardennes racetrack, as represented by Pierre Alain Thibault, Luc Willems and our friend José Close, as well as David and Pierre, our monitors, not forgetting the Bara driving school for its generous personal and material assistance. Our heartfelt thanks also go to Benoit Michel Morimont, for organising the safe planning for the day. Photos : Luc Willems et Caroline Dechamps.

5 Continents, 2 swimmers,1 purpose : linking the 5 continents.

 5 Continents, 2 swimmers,1 purpose : linking the 5 continents.

Two long distance swimmers, Arnaud CHASSERY and Philippe CROIZON
One valid, the other one handicapped (four limbs amputated).

ARNAUD CHASSERY

Took part in the world amateur championship of long distance swimming in 2008 in Australia.
In 2008,managed to succeed in the emblematic event of long distance swimming across the Channel (the paragon event) in16h38.
In 2010, swam across the straits of Gibraltar in 4h04.

PHILIPPE CROIZON

After two years of intensive training, managed to swim across the Channel in13h23,a real achievement.
The first man in the world to achieve this feat, named the Everest of swimming, with such a heavy handicap.

WHY REALISE SUCH A HUMAN ADVENTURE ?

With our partner International Handicap, we want to show our determination and cooperation in the symbol of world solidarity defended by this NGO.

This symbol remains to be defined, but here is a concrete example: a petition across the five continents to stop the production and use of antipersonnel mines which kill and mutilate every 90 minutes.

Our aim will also be to bear a testimony of courage and surpassing of oneself, to show that solidarity still exists and then to reveal handicap in a new light.

For us swimmers, this human adventure will mean: swimming across Oceania, Asia, Africa ,
Europe and America from May to September 2013 to link them symbolically in order to build bridges between the five continents and thus demonstrate that men are not so distant from one another. If we can swim from one continent to another it is because men are closely linked together beyond social, cultural, political or religious specificities.

However, the aim of this initiative does not only deal in a sporting event, it also shows our determination to support the countries particularly vulnerable to handicap.

If you recognize yourself in our project ,our ideas and our values please join us.

Sportingly yours.

Arnaud and Philippe.
